The five factors, in plain English
Every lot is scored on the same five factors our graders use at the sorting tray. No mystery grades.
- Luster
- How sharply the nacre reflects light under north daylight. Mirror luster moves price more than size.
- Surface
- The share of clean skin. Minor natural marks are normal, even at AAA.
- Shape
- Round commands the premium; near-round, drop and oval follow. Fine baroques are prized for design.
- Colour
- White with silver or rosé overtone, gold from champagne to deep. Evenness is what we score.
- Size
- Banded 9–10, 11–12, 13–14 and 15 mm+. Price per gram steps up with each band.

A note on the tooth test
The famous tooth test only suggests a gritty surface. It cannot prove origin, nacre depth or grade.
Five honest authenticity checks
What each check proves, and what it cannot.

Drill-hole inspection
Nacre layers show at the hole and expose coated fakes. It cannot grade quality.

Surface under a loupe
Cultured pearls show fine growth texture; moulded beads look too perfect.

Weight and density
Solid nacre sits heavier than plastic or hollow glass. Indicative only.

Certificate cross-check
Verify any certificate with the issuing lab. A paper alone proves nothing.

Lab X-ray referral
The only conclusive test of nacre thickness and nucleus. We refer; we never fake it.
